Is the current social system meeting all of the fundamental needs of all the individuals within it? Obviously the answer is no. Just as obvious is the realization that no system will ever meet all the needs of society. But as a society have we stopped to ask ourselves if there is a better way? For those of us working on The City Project we believe there is. This document gives a brief description of the reasons why we believe this and outlines some of the strategies we are working on to bring about permanent change.
The flaws in the current system.
* The wealth generated by the majority is retained by the minority.
* The current system does not allow all of society access to more than fundamental needs thus creating a poverty cycle.
* Limits options for minority groups
* Creates environments with unfair, unsafe and discriminatory working conditions.
* Capitalism must continue to find new areas to create profit which eventually leads to abuse of the labour force, quality goods and services being held back from the marketplace if it will endanger profit and the increase of end product cost.
What people want.
* The right to make personal choices
* The freedom to advance socially and economically.
* To be rewarded fairly for their work.
* To have access to enough funds to provide adequately for their fundamental needs.
The proposal.
To provide an environment that offers free healthcare, education, transport, utilities, communications and a shorter working week while being paid a full wage as well as discounted shelter and staple food products allowing individuals greater access and means to live happy and productive lives.
How can this be achieved?
This can be achieved by one company choosing to create a large city providing healthcare, education, transport, utilities, communications and a shorter working week while being paid a full wage as well as discounted shelter and staple food products as well as an environment for all its citizens that is beneficial to all levels of society at minimized or no cost.
By owning every service good or property within this city the company can redistribute wealth to its citizens by providing these fundamental services allowing its citizens greater control over their circumstances by allowing a larger portion of their wage available for a higher standard of living.
Where will funding come from?
Funding will be gained initially from capital raised from contracts with chosen companies competing for product placement within the city. Costs will also be offset by revenue generated through sales of services and goods to individuals working on creation of the city.
What product or service will the city provide that will be its fundamental income stream?
It has been suggested that an information technology industry or some other industry that does not deal in physical goods that could be marketed to both international and national interests.
Why hasn't this concept been suggested previously?
The answer has a myriad of reasons.
The technology has not been available to carry out the administration of such a vast project nor has their been sufficient transport infrastructure available to carry out a project of this size.
It has been more economically viable to build businesses around existing services provided by smaller cities then to create those foundational services.
Another reason is that no one has had the financial ability to fund a project of this magnitude.
The most significant reason that this concept has not been suggested previously is because it is not a profit generating exercise. It is true to say that a company that owned every service, good and property would generate a profit, but to redistribute this wealth fairly among its citizens is not a concept aligned with generating a profit for personal gain.
Will greed or selfishness corrupt this utopian model?
Firstly this model is not Utopian, While the company would strive to create an environment where individuals have the resources to make choices that can lead to a better standard of living; it will not enforce decisions on individuals who may choose to make choices based on greed and selfishness. These choices based on greed and selfishness will be limited as the infrastructure of the company will be such that no minority group will be able to gain the majority of the wealth. The company will also provide the infrastructure to benefit minority groups and create an infrastructure that is environmentally responsible which will limit individuals from abuses currently seen in society that are based on greed and selfishness.
Why change the current system that rewards individuals that work hard to achieve their goals?
While it is true that in some cases great wealth is accumulated through hard work and determination this type of scenario is only a very small proportion of how great wealth is achieved.
In the majority great wealth is accumulated by large corporations who's only goal is to provide profit for their shareholders which make up an extremely small proportion of society. Because the majority of these companies are in a position of great wealth and power they continue to oppress the labour force and increase cost of goods to make the profits that are their goal. Globalization, rationalization and global mergers all contribute to the formula that provides their shareholders with profit. But this will end.
Sooner or later there will be no one else to merge with, no labour force that is not already oppressed to the extent of breaking point and will not be able to raise costs anymore. What will happen then? Markets will fall, unemployment will rise and economies will crash only to revive and start the process again.
Why continue on this track when there is another alternative? An alternative that will encourage growth not only of industry but of individuals. This is why we exist, to answer this question.
